Ostuni (33.000 inhabitants) is located on the last foothills of southern Murge. Its old town, called 'La Terra'-the Earth- is very famous for the monochrome color of its settlement, strictly white. Infact all the houses are painted lime and for tis particular topography Ostuni is called with fairtale names as as the White City, Queen of Olives, Nativity City. The nucleus ancient - probably the acropolis Messapian support - it is perched on the steep sides of a hill and has a plant ellipsoidal, clearly expressed by the city walls reinforced by towers of Aragon. We are eight of the fifteen original, as well as the good parts of the bastions that enclosed the medieval city. Ostuni is a fascinating maze of narrow, winding, a series of courtyards, squares and streets that once were owned by five doors opening in the wall, with towers, machicolations and hoardings. The only true street to reach the summit of the "cone" that divides the old town into two parts is via Cathedral, while all the others which intersect it are blind alleys and narrow and steep stairs. Here there are cubicolari houses, often dug into the rock, connected by arches and semi-arches that act as buttresses and support, as well as buildings, that for the coats of arms, the portals and the variety of architectural lines, shade the blinding flash of white labyrinth with patches of golden ocher. On top of the hill, finally, the Cathedral stands , wonderful blend of Romanesque, Gothic and Venetian, which dominates the plain of olive trees to the sea.
